Many reviewers were put off when Thomas Hardy published this, his first collection of poetry, late in and after swearing off fiction. If "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" and "Jude the Obscure" offended them, "Wessex Poems" confused them - its style and diction seemed clumsy, and its themes did nothing to reassure them/5.

The English author Thomas Hardy set all of his major novels in the south and southwest of England. Thomas Hardy's first love was always poetry. It was not untilwhen he was 58 years old, having already established his reputation with 14 novels and over 40 short stories, that his first book of poetry, "Wessex Poems" was published.
